What to Wear to a Winery Wedding in Paso Robles
Vineyard weddings have their own dress code, and it's not what you'd wear to a ballroom. Here's how to dress for a Paso Robles winery wedding as a guest.

If you've received an invitation to a winery wedding in Paso Robles and the dress code says "wine country formal" or "vineyard chic," you are not alone in having no idea what that means. Here's a practical guide for guests.
Understand the Terrain
Before you think about what to wear, think about where you're going. Paso Robles vineyard weddings typically involve:
- Gravel or crushed granite pathways
- Grass ceremony areas that may be uneven or soft after irrigation
- Outdoor cocktail hours with no shade
- Temperature swings, warm afternoons, cool evenings
- Occasional wind
This matters because the shoes and fabrics that work in a hotel ballroom will work against you here.
For Women
Shoes: This is the most important decision. Stilettos will sink into grass and get stuck in gravel. Block heels, wedges, or dressy flats are the right call. If you love heels, bring a pair of flats for the reception.
Dress length: Midi and maxi lengths photograph beautifully at vineyard weddings and move well in the wind. Mini dresses work too, just know you may be sitting on hay bales or wooden benches.
Fabric: Linen, chiffon, and lightweight cotton breathe well in the afternoon heat. Avoid heavy fabrics that will make you miserable by cocktail hour.
Color: Avoid white, ivory, and champagne, those are for the bride. Dusty rose, sage green, terracotta, navy, and warm neutrals all photograph well against vineyard backdrops. Bold colors are welcome at most Paso Robles vineyard weddings; the setting can handle it.
Layers: Bring a wrap, blazer, or light jacket. Paso Robles evenings in spring and fall can drop 20 degrees after sunset.
For Men
Suit vs, slacks: A linen or lightweight suit is ideal. If the invitation says cocktail attire, a blazer with dress pants works. Skip the heavy wool suit unless it's a winter wedding.
Shoes: Leather dress shoes are fine on gravel. Avoid suede, it won't survive the terrain.
Tie: Optional at most vineyard weddings unless the invitation specifies black tie. A pocket square or open collar reads as appropriately dressed up without being overdressed.
Color: Navy, tan, light grey, and olive all work well in a vineyard setting. A white shirt is classic; a light blue or subtle pattern is equally appropriate.
What "Wine Country Formal" Actually Means
It means: dress as you would for a nice dinner out, but make practical choices for an outdoor setting. You should look intentional and put together, but you should also be able to walk across a field without incident.
When in doubt, err slightly more dressed up than you think you need to be. You can always remove a jacket. You can't add formality you didn't bring.
A Note on the Weather
Paso Robles summers are hot, afternoons regularly reach 95 to 100°F. If you're attending a summer vineyard wedding, prioritize breathable fabrics and plan to be in direct sun during the ceremony. Spring and fall are ideal weather windows, with warm days and cool evenings. Winter weddings are rare but happen; bring a real coat.
